It’s Facebook Birthday Today

The most popular social networking site, Facebook was introduced on 4th February, 2004 at the dorm of Harvard University and in those terms today its Facebook birthday today. It was created by Mark Zuckerburg along with his four friends Andrew McCollum, Chris Hughes, Dustine Moskovitx and Eduardo Saverin as thefacebook.com, which later got the name Facebook.

It was basically a hobby project of Zuckerberg, which is initially limited to the college network and gradually got spread to other universities. Within just few months it became very popular. In October, 2007 Microsoft bought it’s around 1.6 % of shares for approximately $240 million. Google also offered partnership for this deal but it didn’t work out.

Graph Search, is the latest a feature of this social networking site that was announced by CEO of Facebook, which is a tool that can use social data for helping assemble results for users. Voice caling and Facebook cards are some of the other introduced features that are big attractions for users.

Although, the popularity of this site is increasing day by day, but still it get involved in controversies related to users privacy, hacking attacks, underage members etc. Zuckerburg was also drag to the court for stealing the idea of Facebook from one of his senior. Eduardo Saverin, co-founder of Facebook also filled a case against CEO of Facebook for leaving him out of their company. However, both the cases were settled out of the court.

India, US, Indonesia, Mexico and Brazil are the countries from where Facebook has got most of its users. It enjoys huge leads over other social networking sites such as Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn. As per the report of September 2012, there were more than 1 billion users of Facebook.

The Social Network, a movie released in 2011 was based on the events which led to inception of this social networking site along with the involvement of the tech titans like Peter Thiel and Sean Parker. This movie also got nominated for Oscars and won three awards in various categories.
